The Public Should be Aware of This Little-Known Kidney Cancer Symptom

According to reporting from mirror.co.uk, over 13,000 cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed in the UK annually. With up to 34% of cases being considered preventable, the public could benefit from knowing some of the early signs and symptoms. One of the more unusual symptoms of kidney cancer can actually occur during sleep.

Night sweats are not a diagnostic symptom of kidney cancer, but it’s one that many people may not have heard about. Abnormal sweating and high body temp can also be a sign of infection, something that your physician would definitely want to rule out first.

Other possible signs of kidney cancer can include:

  • Blood in the urine
  • A persistent fever/high body temperature
  • Fatigue
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain between the ribs or waist that doesn’t dissipate
  • A lump or swelling affecting the neck, below the ribs, or your back

About Kidney Cancer (Renal Cell Carcinoma)

Renal cell carcinoma is a cancer of the kidney that generally appears in the lining of the proximal convoluted tubule, a passage in the kidney that transports primary urine. Though generally considered rare, it is the most common type of kidney cancer to affect adults. There are several risk factors that increase a person’s likelihood of getting kidney cancer, such as smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure. Other risk factors include long term use of NSAIDs, hysterectomy, certain genetic disorders, family history, and cystic disease of the kidney. This cancer rarely produces symptoms in its early stages, but when it has reached an advanced stage, symptoms may include flank pain, a noticeable abdominal mass, bloody urine, fatigue, fever, night sweats, weight loss and appetite loss, hypertension, and elevated calcium levels.
