The month of May has been designated as Bladder Cancer Awareness Month. Bladder cancer is becoming one of the most common cancers in the US, yet people diagnosed with bladder cancer suddenly feel that they are alone in their struggle not knowing where to turn.
It is estimated that there are 725,000 individuals currently living with bladder cancer in the U.S. with approximately 80,000 new cases being diagnosed each year.
When bladder cancer becomes metastatic (spreads), the survival rates offer a poor prognosis.
The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) hopes to shine a spotlight on the disease this month. It is a tall order and one that has become an annual priority. Goals include:
• Breaking down the stigma related to Bladder cancer
• Promoting knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms
• Providing information about the latest approved treatments
By raising awareness, opportunities for early detection increase. Beginning with this awareness month as the central point, it is critical to educate the public to recognize early signs, and especially to recommend how avoiding tobacco lowers the risk of bladder cancer. The most obvious sign is blood in the urine at which point a person should immediately contact their doctor.
A Walk to End Bladder Cancer
During the month of May, BCAN has planned in-person and virtual Walks to promote the “End of Bladder Cancer.” There will be other initiatives that highlight BCAN’s message to patients and their families that they are not alone and there is a dedicated organization waiting to support their cause.
Join the conversation, share your stories, and help fight bladder cancer.
Everyone is invited to take part in Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, raise awareness, and help make a difference by fostering a stronger and supportive community. The result will be improved outcomes for everyone.
