The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that in 2024 we will see approximately 100,640 new cases of melanoma skin cancer which is diagnosed more than any other cancer in the U.S.
Melanoma is responsible for a majority of deaths from skin cancer. From 2015 through 2019 melanoma cases increased annually by 2 to 3% especially in people over age 50.
Who is Most at Risk?
According to Axios, individuals who are periodically exposed to sunburn are more at risk of melanoma. Henry Lim, at Detroit’s Henry Ford Dermatology acknowledges that there is a definite connection between sun exposure and squamous and basal cell carcinoma skin cancers. However, other factors are involved such as improved skin cancer detection and an aging population of Americans.
Year-Round Protection is Needed
Dr. Lim and the ACS offer advice to protect against skin cancer that we have heard many times, but it needs repeating:
• Limit direct exposure especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Cover up and protect your eyes with sunglasses that block a minimum of 99% of UV light.
• Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF minimum of 30 reapplying every two hours.
• Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
